|
|
| This fall I am apply to neuropsychology programs. I've come across a neuropsychology program at the Queen's College campus of City University New York (CUNY). They have 2 neuropsychology tracks. One track is strictly neuropsychology. The second track is clinical neuropsychology. However it is not accredited by APA. Does anybody know anything about this program? Is it worthy of my time and effort? Or should I not consider it as an option due to not being APA certified? |

Despite the APA issue, Queens College has a good reputation for neuropsych, so it's a tough call. The APA accreditation situation hurts their students in terms of obtaining internships / postdocs (since many of them have training program requirements), but if you're not at all picky about life after grad school, it's not a bad program. _________________ Lee Ashendorf, Ph.D.

What do you mean by this, if you dont mind me asking. I have been looking at Queens College for grad school as well...so any info on the topic as well as your statement would be much appreciated. |

Sorry, I see how that can sound worse than I meant it. I just meant that Queens has a good reputation, but some internship sites absolutely require APA accreditation in their interns, like anything government-operated (such as the VA). Some jobs have the same requirement. So while the students get great neuropsych experience, being at the site hurts them too. But as long as you are willing to hear "sorry, your school wasn't accredited" from some places, then I think Queens would be a decent choice. _________________ Lee Ashendorf, Ph.D.

That's great to hear, I think accreditation is the only thing keeping Queens off the national radar for neuropsych programs. That's exciting, keep us posted. _________________ Lee Ashendorf, Ph.D.

| Queens gets thumbs down from the APA because they're too focused on neuropsych, and then neuropsych internship sites say no to Queens students because their program isn't APA accredited. What's wrong with that picture? At the sites where I have been an extern, Queens students are consistently among the best trained in testing and knowledgable about neuroscience. Yet, students from Psy.D. programs who've taken a course in neuropsychology can have an easier time getting internships because of the APA seal of approval. Seems like everyone and his brother wants to be a neuropsychologist these days, yet few get the best training. Might be cynical, but do I smell a conspiracy here? |
