I am a bit confused about the different education routes to becoming a neuropsychologist.

If one attends a neuropsych track PhD program and completes a neuropsych internship during the program, do you still need to do a post-doc fellowship before being able to be a practicing (licensed) neuropsych.

What about for pediatrics... will a post-doc fellowship be a requisite or can the clinical internship during the PhD program be specialized enough such that the felllowship is not needed.

Also, if one goes into a clinical psych program that is not a neuropsych track, what steps must be taken during and after the PhD program to become a certified neuropsychologist?

Any information about any of the above scenarios will be greatly apreciated. Thanks!

Yup. Neuropsych these days requires a post-doc. Now, in fact, they require a 2-year post-doc. No difference whether it's adult or pediatrics. In general, the point of a post-doc is to have supervised hours, so in theory the requirement should just be getting supervision, but it seems that people actually care about it being a post-doc.

People in a general clinical track without neuropsych experience are at a disadvantage in obtaining a neuropsych internship these days, but as long as you can find an internship program that has a neuropsych focus without being a "hardcore" neuropsych internship, it's still possible to specialize afterward. I'd want to try to get at least some neuropsych experience while still in graduate school, just to show internships that you have some experience.

Yep, Lash is right, and I'll make the answer short and sweet!

Look up Houston Conference Guidelines on yahoo. Or, you can directly go to abpp.org and click clinical neuropsychology board certification. You'll get all the info there. Ultimately, THE recognized neuropsychologist is ABPP/CN ones. You'll know what I'm talking about after you go to the site.

Good luck!
