2011-2012 POSTDOCTORAL CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS
CENTRAL ARKANSAS VETERANS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Little Rock/North Little Rock, Arkansas
The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) is currently
recruiting applicants for two postdoctoral fellowship positions in
Clinical Psychology (1-year positions, Sept 2011 - Aug 2012), one with
an interdisciplinary Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) & Serious Mental
Illness emphasis, and a second with an emphasis on Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD). Training goals are to provide preparation for advanced
practice competence in the substantive area of Clinical Psychology and
to provide the fellow with supervised training and experience in
evidence-based practice and in recovery-oriented services specific to
target populations through residential, outpatient, telehealth, and
community based interventions.
Emphasis Areas:
Interprofessional Fellowship in Psychosocial Rehabilitation & Recovery
Oriented Services - This state-of-the-art, interprofessional clinical
training program focuses on a comprehensive clinical and psychosocial
rehabilitation approach to service delivery, education, and implementing
change in mental health care settings. The purpose of the
Interprofessional Fellowship Program is to develop future mental health
leaders with vision, knowledge, and commitment to transforming mental
health care systems in the 21st century by emphasizing functional
capability, rehabilitation, and recovery.
Up to four fellows are recruited each year in psychology, social work, rehabilitation counseling, nursing, psychiatry, and occupational therapy, and the fellows work together on common projects throughout the year. Fellows
will work primarily with Veterans diagnosed with serious mental
illnesses (SMI) and receive training in delivering a range of evidence-based and recovery-oriented practices. While specific options vary from time to time, fellows typically work with interdisciplinary teams within inpatient, outpatient, telehealth, and community based settings in VHA programs such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation & Recovery Center, Mental Health Intensive Case Management, Vocational Rehabilitation, and inpatient psychiatric units. Other training experiences usually include family services, medical settings, outpatient psychotherapy and others.
In addition to required core training experiences in these SMI- and PSR-focused programs, fellows will also choose an elective option from among a variety of settings within CAVHS. Fellows are expected to maintain a PSR and recovery-oriented approach to their work in all placements. Training and supervised experience in providing supervision is also included during
the fellowship year. Services to Veterans and their families include a
focus on helping the individual to transcend limits imposed by mental
illness, social barriers, and stigma, so that personal goals and
aspirations can be achieved. Primary supervisors in psychology for the
CAVHS fellowship PSR track currently include Wendy Batdorf, Ph.D and
Marie Mesidor, Ph.D.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - The postdoctoral fellowship with
emphasis in PTSD will encompass interprofessional training experiences
with individuals diagnosed with PTSD and co-morbid mental disorders in a
variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on improving quality of
life through understanding stress/trauma responses, increased personal
awareness, and improved symptom management. Primary opportunities will
be provided in the Residential PTSD and Outpatient PTSD Programs. Both
provide mental health services for both Veterans with a history of
chronic PTSD and with returning Veterans from the Global War on Terror
(GWOT), Iraq and Afghanistan (OIF/OEF) and for their families and
significant others. The PTSD Fellowship has the following structure:
1. Primary Emphasis: The Fellow will demonstrate competency in one of
the evidence-based treatments (EBT) for PTSD: Prolonged Exposure or
Cognitive Processing Therapy. Fellows will receive advance training in
the EBT for PTSD the Fellow chooses. Upon staff certification that the
Fellow is practicing this EBT at an independent, competent level, the
Fellow will then be trained to supervise others conducting this same
EBT. Also, the Fellow is to do a clinical demonstration project,
applying this EBT with a specified clinical population, i.e., PTSD
diagnosed Veterans with chronic pain, or applying it in a novel way,
i.e., via telehealth.
2. Secondary Emphasis: The Fellow chooses a second treatment modality with which s/he will attain independent, competent level of practice. Available options include the other EBT for PTSD; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an EBT for Depression and Co-Occurring Anxiety; Seeking Safety; and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
3. In addition to these major areas of emphasis, the PTSD Fellow may
gain experience working in a series of community-based recovery
workshops (Life Guard Program). Training and supervised experience in
providing supervision is also included during the fellowship year.
Fellowship Information:
Training Site: The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS)
is a large and complex VA Medical System within the Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA). Located in beautiful central Arkansas, one of
the country's best-kept secrets for a high quality of living, CAVHS has
a strong history of training excellence. The medical center is located
in a metropolitan area of approximately 580,000 people and draws from a
primary service area of 275,000 veterans. Some military personnel and
