CHILD/PEDIATRIC PSYCHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP-SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Applications are invited for a 24-month postdoctoral fellowship in Child/Pediatric Psychology at San Antonio Military Medical Center/Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas with the position anticipated to begin September 2013. This is a civilian position. SAMMC serves military service members, their families and military retirees. The fellowship is designed to prepare the post-doctoral level trainee to assume the professional responsibilities of a clinical child/pediatric psychologist.

Training model and philosophy: A Practitioner-Scholar model guides the fellowship training at Brooke Army Medical Center, with an emphasis on clinical practice that is validated by empirical research. The program offers diverse training opportunities with active duty military populations, their families, military retirees and their family members in the military medical setting.
The initial year is focused on the development of skills needed to provide general clinical child psychology services with additional experience with developmental disorders. Training experiences include:
* Psychological assessment and treatment of a wide variety of childhood mental health disorders.
* Diagnostic and psychological assessment of children and adolescents.
* Participation in the Developmental Clinic, a multidisciplinary team to evaluate developmental delays and autism spectrum disorders.
* Participation in the Well Baby Clinic in the Pediatrics Department
* Consultation with Pediatricians and other primary care providers.
* Experience with evidence-based treatment approaches with children
* Participation in parent training programs
* Teaching and training responsibilities for pre-doctoral residents, practicum students, treatment technicians, and para-professionals.

The second year of the fellowship is focused on pediatric psychology, with the goal of preparing the fellow to work in a medical setting with medically ill children, genetic/congenital disorders, feeding problems, pain management issues, and children dealing with chronically or terminally ill family members. The opportunity to build on clinical skills, develop more advanced knowledge across a broader range of diagnostic issues and develop particular area(s) of interest within pediatric health psychology is available. To prepare for responsibilities associated with the hospital-based or outpatient treatment practice of pediatric psychology, fellows may provide mentoring and supervision to other trainees, including the residents in the APA-approved clinical psychology internship program. Experiences include:
* Participation with the multidisciplinary Pediatric Diabetes Team
* Participation in the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic
* Participation in the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic
* Participation with the multidisciplinary Feeding Team
* Participation in the Adolescent Headache Clinic
* Pediatric Irritable Bowel Disease Clinic
* Clinical training and experience in the behavioral health management of pediatric illnesses such as asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, headache, elimination disorders and sleep problems

Training opportunities: The fellow will receive individualized training and supervision throughout both years as well as ample opportunities to attend training offered at the institution and some conferences /trainings outside the medical center.

Selection criteria:
Applicants must have completed all requirements for graduation before starting the Fellowship. Eligibility for entry into our training program is based on completion of a doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The applicant will be required to have completed an APA approved accredited internship program. In addition, the applicants are expected to have completed some graduate coursework in child/adolescent development and have had at least one rotation in their internship program in the treatment of children and/or adolescents. Ideal candidates will have completed some practica working with children or adolescents prior to the fellowship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Applicants who meet the selection criteria and cannot travel to San Antonio for an in-person interview will be offered a telephone interview. The Fellowship faculty members participate in this process through reviewing applications, interviewing and ranking applicants. The position will be offered to the candidate who demonstrates the best fit with the program. Applications will be accepted through January 11, 2013.

The program is participating in a uniform notification date (UND), as outlined by APPIC.

First year fellows enter at the Government Service (G.S.) 11 grade, with locality adjustment pay added. They will be advanced to a G.S. 12 grade in the second year of the fellowship if they are licensed and in good standing in the program.
