I eventually want to be a clinical neuropsychologist and will be applying to graduate school next fall.

I know it is best to apply to schools where there are faculty whose research you are interested in. However, I found professors in psychology department areas of cognitive neuroscience, cognitive (with neuropsych subfield), and clinical (with neuropsych subfield) whose research I am interested in.

My question: Should I avoid applying to the cognitive neuroscience and cognitive areas of psychology departments if I eventually want to practice clinical neuropsych.... or is it more important to make sure I work with someone whose research I like and with whom I "click"?

Thanks!!

As long as your Ph.D. is in clinical psychology and not cognitive neuroscience, it is fine, even desirable, to have a neuroscience heavy research track on your path towards becoming a neuropsychologist.

I have been told that if you want to actually work as a clinical neuropsychologist then you need to earn your PhD from one of the applied programs - clinical, possibly counseling in some states. if you earn your phd in a cognitve program you will not be eligible to get licensed to work clinically.
