For an APPCN-affiliated site, the answer is probably yes. Other postdocs tend to be less formalized than internships, though, so I suppose it's possible to find someone off the mainstream who doesn't mind taking on someone from a non-accredited internship site. So I guess the short answer is, it's strongly recommended to go with an accredited internship, but probably not completely impossible if you don't have one. _________________ Lee Ashendorf, Ph.D.

| thank you for your response. I recently spoke with a neuropsychologist who is in a private practice (it might be a group practice, i am not totally sure) and is offering a postdoctoral opportunity in neuropsychology. Is it acceptable to do a post doc in a private practice - I was told it was for two years, and I would be supervised by a licenced psychologist who is a clinical neuropsychologist. any information you could provide would be appreciated, thank you |

It depends on your career goals. Is the neuropsychologist board certified? the preference would be for ABCN, as in ABPP-Cn (http://www.theabcn.org/). ABPN is kind of weak, so I would avoid those practitioners.
You want to make sure your training is consistent with the houston guidelines which you should be able to find on the website linked above.
For overall training, I'd prefer a university based medical school with more than one ABCN certified neuropsychologist. |
