A family member was diagnosed with SM at an early age. But now at 11, has regressed and is not talking. I say she needs a neuropsych. exam, but she is not my child. Any feedback or experience with this type of behavior? She talks only in short words and stares at you when you ask her a question. She has never been tested, but is on Zoloft, whcih helped for a while, but now nothing.
If anyone has any ideas, I would love to pass them on to my relatives. |

MY son had Selective Mutism which is a social communication anxiety disorder. He was diagnosed at age 3. He was on medication Kolonopin at age 4. In addition, he had speech therapy and behavioral therapy to overcome it. He is in special education first grade and talking in school.
However, he won't use the bathroom in school and he is working on preschool language goals.
The website is www.childhoodanxietynetwork.org or www.selectivemutism.org
It's a long road down SM. There is still much more work to do now that he is talking in school. Get as much school support as possible. Good luck. |
