MY son had Selective Mutism which is a social communication anxiety disorder at age 3 entering preschool. He was not able to speak in school. He was on medication and had behavioral therapy and speech therapy. He was talking in school when he was in kindergarten, but regressed to SM upon weaning off mediation. Then, he made a breakthrough with the speech therapist. Out of 50 trials, he was given the option to name animals and he said 4 animals. Progress continued.
He was in a special education first grade and talking in school. He is raising his hands and answering questions.
At the end of the school year, we had to complete the Conners survey for ADHD for our physician to review. All of a sudden, he has severe ADHD. He is fidgety in his seat, pulling on his shirt, doing a dance at the blackboard, mumbling to himself in large group and making faces. He is also playing in the room with toys and the Occupational Therapist calls him back for therapy.
Is this possible to go from one extreme to another? Are we going from anxiety medication to ritilan in just 1 year.
ADHD can't be officially diagnosed because my son still has an anxiety disoder present. He won't use the bathroom in school and uses a pull-up and comes home with a wet diaper.
The plan is to put him back on anxiety medication and re-visit and re-score the BASC-II test and Conners survey.
Can this happen? |
