Hi, I've graduated with a Psy.D. in clinical psych. My internship did not have significant neuropsych training. I took one neuropsych class during my px. I have a master's in medical sciences degree from a medical school also, where I've taken graduate level classes in physio, neuroscience, pharmacology, endocrinology, etc. I also have significant research experience (publications) but Not in neuropsych or psychology - in ophthalmology. So, basically not much practical experience doing neuropsych testing, interpreting, writing. I asked my former professor about training. She told me if I don't apply for a residency b/c I feel like i don't have enough experience, I should consider a specialty internship (doing another one) or getting training from the Fielding Institute (for working psychologists). I think that I probably won't get a fellowship/residency given my lack of experience. Would you agree? And, so i looked into the internships - only 4 or 5 had Major rotations or training in Neuropsych - but 4 were Not APA-approved - If I want to become a board-certified neuropsychologist, do I have to do an APA-approved internship (before doing an APA-approved residency) or is a non-APA one sufficient as long as it is primarily neuropsych work/training? Thanks a lot in advance.

I can't speak for the specific internship, but according to APA's Div 40 (Houston Conference), you must complete a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology to become a board-certified neuropsychologist.

Check out the APA's div 40 criteria: http://www.theaacn.org/position_papers/Houston_Conference.pdf

There are also some excellent resources available at:

www.div40.org/pdf/INS_2007_Training_and_Board_Cert.ppt

and

www.div40.org/anst/Files/Neuropsychology_Symposium_APA.ppt

Good luck!
