________________________________________________________________ Windows 95/98 Brain Startup Screens Copyright (c) 2000 J.N.Browndyke ________________________________________________________________ Purpose: When you start Windows 95/98, it displays a picture of clouds with a floating Windows 95/98 logo. Blue and gray color bars pulse across the bottom of the screen, so you won't think the computer is stuck. But why should you gaze at a Microsoft logo every time your computer starts when you could be looking at nifty brains? Usage: If the file LOGO.SYS is present in the root directory of the boot drive (typically, C://), Windows 95/98 loads it as the animated logo bitmap. Don't let the .sys extension fool you, the LOGO.SYS file is nothing more than an animated image file. Deleting or changing this file will in NO way harm your computer or software system...just make sure you are changing the LOGO.SYS file. 1. To install the brain startup screens, copy the file you want to use to the root directory of the boot drive (typically, C://). 2. There are four brain startup screens to choose from: a.] a logo featuring a left hemispheric view of the brain with a simple non-animated background (filename = brainpic_static_background.sys) b.] the same logo as a.) above, but with animated background colors (filename = brainpic_circular_animated_background.sys) c.] a logo featuring a left hemispheric view of Brodmann's brain map (cytoarchitectonic structure of the cortex) with a simple non-animated background (filename = brain_brodmannmap_static_background.sys) d.] the same as c.) above, but with animated background colors (filename = brain_brodmannmap_animated_background.sys) 3. Once you have decided which of the brain startup screens to use, rename LOGO.SYS (if present) to LOGO.OLD, and rename your selected brain logo to LOGO.SYS. If LOGO.SYS is not present in your root directory, just rename the brain file to LOGO.SYS and place it in the root directory. That's it. 4. Restart your computer and enjoy the show. Switching out brain startup logos requires going through steps 2 - 3. Note that the two screens that Windows 95/98 displays at shutdown are also image files. The one that asks you to wait while Windows 95/98 shuts down is LOGOW.SYS; the one that informs you it's now safe to shut the computer off is LOGOS.SYS. You can use any of the brain startup logos to replace these files, which reside in the Windows 95/98 directory. ________________________________________________________________ Friday, 26 May, 2000
